Minister Kumar to start official tour
The newly appointed Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Honourable Premila Kumar will commence her official tour of the Central Municipal Councils and the National Fire Authority (NFA) from Monday 17 December, 2018.
The Honourable Minister will visit the National Fire Authority Headquarters to meet with the Chairman, the Board members, Chief Executive Officer and Management of the NFA. The visit is a familiarisation tour, which would enable the Honourable Minister understand more and in depth the NFA’s operations, and review service improvements that will be implemented soon.
The NFA was first institutionalised in 1995 and manages 18 fire stations with 83 fire trucks and ambulances. The organisation has employed 530 workers and Government over the last 3 years, has heavily invested in effective service delivery. An average of $1.5 Million was invested into Seaqaqa, Taveuni, Korovou, Savusavu, Nakasi, Nabouwalu, Rakiraki, and Lami fire stations. The Fijian Government has also commenced subsidizing ambulance services in Fiji.
Later during the week, the Hon Minister will visit the Municipal Councils, starting with the Suva City Council. The Council will brief the Minister on its core function operations and responsibilities, the implementation of the existing programs and key stakeholder relationships.
The Honourable Minister will also get an in depth view of the Customer grievance handling mechanisms in place, asset management practices and status of capital projects work, which are currently in progress.
In addition, the Minister will be briefed on activities undertaken towards promoting Suva as a destination of importance and sister city arrangements that are in place.
High on the agenda will also be a discussion around the much needed action towards improving the business licensing, ease of doing business and the support role needed for the establishment and operation of small businesses. With Suva having a ratepayer base of nearly 11,400, the Ministry looks forward to a fruitful and constructive discussion between the Honourable Minister and the Suva City Council.
Later in the week, Honourable Minister will visit Lami, Nasinu and Nausori Town Councils, where similar areas of discussions will be held. The Minister will also visit major Municipal Council projects funded by the Government where construction work is in progress. The Hon Minister will be accompanied by a team of senior officials from both the Departments of Local Government and the Town and Country Planning.
