Hon. Kumar meets members of the Hong Kong – Fiji Chamber of Commerce

The Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Hon. Premila Devi Kumar met with the President and members of the Hong Kong-Fiji Chamber of Commerce on Sunday, 21 April 2019.


The Minister together with the Permanent Secretary for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Shaheen Ali, Trade Commissioner/Consul-General to China, Dr Yolinda Chan, Honorary Consul Dr Desmond Lee and senior officials met with the Chamber of Commerce to discuss their future trade and investment plans.


The Chamber of Commerce was established in 2012, to bring together the business community with interest to undertake business with Fiji. Since then, a total of 26 investment projects worth over $95.6 million has been registered. The Chamber of Commerce has also used events such as the Hong Kong Sevens to promote Fiji to the wider business community.


Progress in increasing investments from Hong Kong into Fiji has commenced and will further build on the cooperation between the Chamber and the Trade Commission/Consulate-General, to increase business to business linkages.


“Fiji is open for business and the Fijian Government is ready to provide support in the investment process to genuine investors who bring in new ideas, knowledge and technology into the country,” said Hon. Kumar.


The Minister also reiterated that Fiji as the hub of the Pacific, has a lot to offer in terms of logistics, transportation, communication, trade, educated English speaking workforce and the best internet connectivity in the region. Therefore, investors from Hong Kong will have access to a larger market in the Pacific region.


The President of the Chamber of Commerce stated that their members are seriously interested in doing business in Fiji, and are exploring new areas of investing in Fiji.


The Minister will be visiting Macao to launch the Macau-Fiji Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, 23 April 2019. This will establish formal business-to-business between Fiji and Macau.


Hon. Kumar will also be meeting the Acting Chief Administrator General, Ms Chan Hoi Fan and the Acting Commissioner, Ms Wang Dong.
