International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development (IYSTD)
The UN General Assembly declared 2017 as the International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development (International Year). The initiative was launched in Madrid, Spain with the aim to raise awareness on the contribution of sustainable tourism to development among public and private sector decision-makers and the general public, while mobilizing all stakeholders to work together in making tourism a catalyst for positive change
In line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, the International Year focused on 5 key areas:
- Inclusive and sustainable economic growth;
- Sector inclusiveness, employment and poverty reduction;
- Resource efficiency, environmental protection and climate change;
- Cultural values, diversity and heritage; and
- Mutual understanding, peace and security.
A National Work Program (NWP) was compiled by the Ministry in support of this initiative, highlighting the key priorities of the Fijian Government to plan and conduct tourism activities in the most sustainable manner through collaboration with the tourism stakeholders.
Ten (10) out of the 20 activities in the NWP have been completed with plans to implement the rest of the activities this year.
